Ever wondered why Google decided to christen their series of operating systems after desserts and sweet treats?. They usually name them alphabetically as a way to take note of the chronological order of their updates. But did you ever wonder why Google does it? Really, it started out as an inside joke for the brand. Lots of other companies are into the joke too—Microsoft uses city names and places, Apple after big cats (Cheetah, Jaguar, Panther, Lion, etc.). In fact, when Steve Jobs first started NeXT Computers, his code name for it was Big Mac. Unfortunately, this caused a lawsuit and he had no choice but to succumb. When asked why, this is what Google had to say: “It’s kind of like an internal team thing, and we prefer to be a little bit — how should I say — a bit inscrutable in the matter, I’ll say,” said Randall Sarafa, a Google spokesman.” The obvious thing is that, yeah, the Android platform releases, they go by dessert names and by alphabetical order for the most part.” “For the most part” because two versions of Android, 2.0 and 2.1, were both called Eclair. And because Google won’t say what it called the first two versions of Android, which you can assume started with “A” and “B.” A bit more geekery before you get on with your day: Google has actually built statues of these various Android desserts. They sit on the lawn at the company’s headquarters in Mountain View, California. To date, the company has built gigantic statues of their delicious Android sweets. They are currently sitting on the lawn of Google’s California headquarters.

Recently when Google officially released the name of android 4.4 (Kitkat) they posted the following on their android website. “Android is the operating system that powers over 1 billion smartphones and tablets. Since these devices make our lives so sweet, each Android version is named after a dessert: Cupcake, Donut, Eclair, Froyo, Gingerbread, Honeycomb, Ice Cream Sandwich, and Jelly Bean. As everybody finds it difficult to stay away from chocolate we decided to name the next version of Android after one of our favorite chocolate treats, Kitkat.

Since April 2009, Android versions have been developed under a confectionery-themed code name and released in alphabetical order; the exceptions are versions 1.0 and 1.1 as they were not released under specific code names:

On September 3, 2013, Google announced that one billion activated devices now use the Android OS worldwide. The most recent major Android update was Lollipop 5.0, which was released on November 3, 2014 along with the Nexus 6 smartphone , Nexus 9 tablet, and Nexus Player set-top box.
