From Kanye West’s presidential announcement to Miley Cyrus’s feud with Nicki Minaj and the host’s wardrobe malfunction – here are the must-see moments from the MTV Video Music Awards in Los Angeles.
Miley Cyrus was intent on causing controversy as host of the VMAs, but will her most talked-about moment all be thanks to Nicki Minaj?
A couple days ago, Cyrus weighed in on the Taylor Swift-Nicki Minaj Twitter feud that blew up the Internet this summer. Minaj tweeted her displeasure about the VMA nominations being unfairly skewed toward white artists with “slim bodies” while her “Anaconda” video was ignored for the major categories. Swift made the mistake of calling out Minaj, thinking the tweet was about her.
A New York Times reporter asked Cyrus about the controversy and she didn’t sound thrilled. “If you want to make it about race, there’s a way you could do that. But don’t make it just about yourself,” Cyrus said. “What I read sounded very Nicki Minaj, which, if you know Nicki Minaj is not too kind. It’s not very polite. I think there’s a way you speak to people with openness and love. You don’t have to start this pop star against pop star war. It became Nicki Minaj and Taylor in a fight, so now the story isn’t even on what you wanted it to be about.”
Minaj didn’t weigh in — that is, until she took the stage Sunday night to accept the award for best hip-hop video for “Anaconda.” She thanked her fans, her pastor and then threw to Cyrus.
“And now back to this bitch that had a lot to say about me the other day in the press,” Minaj snapped. “Miley, what’s good?!”
The camera cut to Cyrus, who didn’t miss a beat. “Hey, we’re all in this industry, we all do interviews and we all know how they manipulate shit,” she shot back. “Nicki, congratulations.”
Then it was back to Minaj, who could be seen looking none too happy, mouthing something that looked like “Don’t play with me, bitch …don’t play with me.”
Cyrus continued her hosting duties, introducing the VMA’s artist to watch award, and made what seemed to be very pointed commentary. “The past losers of the award have still gone on to make their mark on the VMA stage — me,” Cyrus said. “I lost this award back in 2008 and I was fine with it, whatever, because it’s no big deal. It’s just an award. And I persevered!”
