Iggy Azalea is in full album rollout mode for her upcoming LP Digital Distortion, and she’s certainly grabbing headlines in the process. When Iggy visited Bravo’s Watch Happens Live! and was asked about her fellow female rapper Nicki Minaj, things heated up. When Cohen (the host of What Happens Live) asked Iggy about ghostwriting accusations, specifically referring to Nicki Minaj‘s 2014 BET Awards acceptance speech, she didn’t reach for any beverage.
“I have just as many people on my writing credits as she has on hers,” answered Iggy with a shrug. “I know I write mine, and if she writes hers, I believe her too. But you can’t look at the credits and be like, ‘Oh look at this massive difference!’ It’s the same number of people on both.”
Back in 2014 when Nicki accepted the BET Award for Best Female Hip-Hop Artist, she made sure to mention in her acceptance speech that “If you hear Nicki Minaj spit, Nicki Minaj wrote it.” Although Onika followed that up with a “no shade,” many believe that this was a shot at Iggy, who was also nominated in the category that year.
Iggy Azalea has been fielding blows from all sides lately. Earlier this week when she sat down for the J Cruz show, the Aussie MC admitted she had contemplated suicide because of how much the music industry had torn her down in the year after her debut album The New Classic dropped.
“I don’t know, there were times when I wanted to just quit life,” the 25-year-old said on-air. “Sometimes I would drive through the canyons to get to my horses and I would be like what if I just kept driving.”
In reaction to this statement, Iggy’s longtime nemesis Azealia Banks chimed in, calling her a slave master and encouraging her to kill herself. Rough.
Iggy will land herself in trouble with such foul statements.
